Mass Food Trust Project’s Origins
WHY MFTP?
There are simply too few grocery stores, and not enough healthy food options, in many communities across the Commonwealth. As a result, residents in some communities suffer disproportionately high rates of diet-related diseases such as obesity and diabetes.
HOW DID THE MFTP BEGIN?
The purpose of establishing the Massachusetts Food Trust Program was to bring capital into the Commonwealth’s food sector in underinvested areas. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts launched this state-funded initiative in 2018 with seed money from the Baker-Polito Administration and in partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR). This financing supported businesses and projects that would expand access to healthy food in underserved areas across the Commonwealth while at the same time supporting our farmers.
